Welcome! I'm Holly Chayes.

This online space has been around in one form or another since 2010, it focuses on making, creativity and living a curious life, plus a lot of clothing.

Some of the projects I've worked on in the past 10+ years include...

Talking About Clothes with Holly Chayes

An interview podcast that's all about clothing (and also, not *really* about clothing at all). Find all the details and listen to conversations about comfort, style, change and shopping here. Or search for Talking About Clothes with Holly Chayes wherever you listen to podcasts.

Who Wears Who?

A personal style coaching and content practice devoted to helping you own and wear your clothes intentionally, instead of being worn by them. Discover your own style guidance, and learn more about the practice of intentional style at WhoWearsWho.com

The Self-Made Wardrobe Project

Predecessor to Who Wears Who, a year-long challenge in 2014/2015 where I only wore clothes I made. That year would have been a lot easier if the clothes had magically made themselves. Learn more about The Self-Made Wardrobe Project and explore the archives here.

The Shawl Geometry Book Series

Enough shawl shapes to keep you knitting for a lifetime. A multi-year exploration of math, shape and space in knitting, where I documented traditional shawl shaping, and iterated on those traditions to create new recipes of shawl shaping. Ultimately this lead to 75+ shapes, and 400+ pages of common and uncommon shawl shaping instructions. This project was inspired by a dozen individual shawl designs, each encapsulating a love of geometric lace design. You can find The Shawl Geometry Series here.

a tired brain, some bangles, and a bead crochet snake

Each Wednesday, I take stock of the projects I’m working on. And the trend of stealing moments for crafting continues. Le sigh. This month feels like it’s been straight up insanity – mostly due to work things – so my crafting time has been truncated, and any sort of brainpower for writing has been basically non-existent. Which is making me super sad, because I really miss writing here, and thinking out loud about craft, and sharing the details of what I’m making. I did realize recently that I’ve never written about the first couple set of bead crochet bangles I made – the ones I’ve worn almost constantly since I finished them. So maybe I’ll use that project to get back into the swing of blog post writing. No related posts.

putting my cardigan aside for a week, so it’s all about the bead crochet

Each Wednesday, I take stock of the projects I’m working on. I took a break from my mammoth of a granny square cardigan, and started working on a couple bead crochet pieces. With only a handful of minutes here and there for crafting (or blog post writing), it’s hugely motivating to be working on a project that shows significant progress after 15 minutes. Here’s to more time for crafting next week. No related posts.

I think my sweater is starting to feel a little neglected.

Each Wednesday, I take stock of the projects I’m working on. My giant granny square is growing – ever so slowly – but still growing. Row by ever longer row. I might have said this before, but I’m at the point where every single round seems never ending. That feeling of never ending rows, combined with very limited crafting time this week, means I managed to crochet 1.5 rounds… This project mostly lives at my desk, and I’ve been squeezing in a few stitches here and there throughout the week. Up until this point, that method has made for slow, consistent, and visible progress. But I think that this shawl/sweater has officially reached the point of needing focused attention, to really grow. Otherwise, I really will be working on this project forever. Anyway! There’s always this coming week, and cooler weather on the horizon (fingers crossed). And one more thing!...
