Welcome! I'm Holly Chayes.

This online space has been around in one form or another since 2010, it focuses on making, creativity and living a curious life, plus a lot of clothing.

Some of the projects I've worked on in the past 10+ years include...

Talking About Clothes with Holly Chayes

An interview podcast that's all about clothing (and also, not *really* about clothing at all). Find all the details and listen to conversations about comfort, style, change and shopping here. Or search for Talking About Clothes with Holly Chayes wherever you listen to podcasts.

Who Wears Who?

A personal style coaching and content practice devoted to helping you own and wear your clothes intentionally, instead of being worn by them. Discover your own style guidance, and learn more about the practice of intentional style at WhoWearsWho.com

The Self-Made Wardrobe Project

Predecessor to Who Wears Who, a year-long challenge in 2014/2015 where I only wore clothes I made. That year would have been a lot easier if the clothes had magically made themselves. Learn more about The Self-Made Wardrobe Project and explore the archives here.

The Shawl Geometry Book Series

Enough shawl shapes to keep you knitting for a lifetime. A multi-year exploration of math, shape and space in knitting, where I documented traditional shawl shaping, and iterated on those traditions to create new recipes of shawl shaping. Ultimately this lead to 75+ shapes, and 400+ pages of common and uncommon shawl shaping instructions. This project was inspired by a dozen individual shawl designs, each encapsulating a love of geometric lace design. You can find The Shawl Geometry Series here.

WS: Knit

All I want to knit right now is garter stitch. Simply knitting, back and forth, with great yarn and good needles. For the moment, life is simply too nuts for anything else (plus I’m getting tired of purling back across on those reallllly long rows at the end of a top down shawl.) So I’m knitting a shawl. In beautiful yarn, and great needles. Entirely in garter (plus a handful of eyelet rows). And it is the only thing keeping me sane right now. (that’s the swatch, not the real thing. I’ll see if I can get a couple pictures of the real shawl posted within the next couple of days or so, when there is sunlight and I’m not blogging at midnight)     A more complete update coming soon-ish. Just as soon as life calms down a touch. (but expect some FO pictures over the weekend, which FO?...

Mrs. Peacock and Mirror World Update

Just a note, to say that I’ve updated both the Mrs. Peacock and Mirror World patterns to make the charts larger. Both charts are now 4 pages instead of 2, making them much easier to read and work from. An updated version has gone out to everyone who has already purchased the patterns, if you’ve purchased the pattern and haven’t gotten the update please let me know.   Hope to be back with some knitting and spinning progress just as soon as I get this secret project off my needles (I’m *this* close to being done). No related posts.

A-HA

UPDATE: A-ha! is now available here on Ravelry. These pattern releases seem to be lumping themselves together lately, (birds of a feather and all that?). Anyway, I have a new shawl available for purchase and download in the latest issue of Tangled Magazine, A-HA (I love the name too, I keep wanting to add an exclamation point every time I type it.)   Forgot to add something super duper important! Get 1$ off with the coupon code SOCKSUMMIT11 from July 28-August 14! This shawl relies on the combination of self-striping sock yarn and pi shawl shaping to create radiating bands of color which give this shawl its pop. The combination of these ever-shifting colors and small bundles of easy and repetitive flower-like motifs creates a shawl that is the perfect challenge for newer lace knitter wanting to dip a toe or two into lace, or for the more experienced knitter...
